South West Essex

Who we are?

Little Angels was set up to promote, support and protect breastfeeding in the community whilst working in conjunction with NHS south West Essex, Health professionals, Voluntary Groups and Children’s Centres to provide a seamless approach to breastfeeding using the UNICEF Baby Friendly 10 steps and 7 point plan.

What we do?

  • Antenatal Support providing information about the benefits of breastfeeding

Currently we can provide support on a one to one basis in the home or at various antenatal groups across the county. We also have an educational talk which is currently being trialed in various schools and colleges within the community to create a better awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.

  • Hospital support at the maternity unit at Basildon and Thurrock Hospital

We have in total 9 girls who work in the hospital and they provide support from 9 am -11 pm, 7 days a week 365 days a year. There are usually 2 girls working at any one time and they can help with anything from latching on to expressing. We support all breastfeeding mums on the ward.

  • One to One home visits

We have 10 girls who work in the community. Once discharged mums can expect a visit from a Little Angel within 48 hours, And a second visit within 10 days. Mum should expect at least two visits and further visits are available upon request.

  • 24 hour Helpline

Our helpline is available to all mums regardless of which area of Essex they live in. It is manned on a voluntary basis by our experienced peer supporters and is available 7 days a week 365 days a year. We are here to help with any problems big or small.

  • Work closely with local children’s centres and voluntary breastfeeding support groups

We hold a list of all the local support groups in the area so we can refer you to your nearest one. You may even see a Little Angel there as we work very closely with the local support groups.
